As the search for global meaning of Fube continues, this month I’m profiling  Fube as a new (2011) acronym for “Fundação Batistense de Esportes “, which according to Google translates from Portugese to “Batistense Sports Foundation” in English.

FUBE is run by Executive Director  Sergio Roberto Machado, and is located in Centro, São João Batista – SC.

When my Portuguese get’s better I’ll let you know what more I learn!

Fube is a village in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa.  It was designed and built by refugees who returned to the DRC after the first democratic elections in 2006.

During the period of 1998 and 2003 the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was the epicenter for what has been called Africa’s World War, with hostilities between rebel groups and government forces resulting in the death of approximately five million people.  During this period, a large number of refugees fled from the DRC’s southern providence to non-government run camps in Zambia. At the peak, the United Nations Refugee Agency estimated 66,000 Congolese refugees were in camps in Zambia.

Through a voluntary repatriation process for Congolese refugees living in Zambai, they began reentering the Katanga Province in 2007.  Here is a great story of the repatriation experience to Fube and other villages as captured by Krista in thereelproject.

Fube was designed to be a safe haven and sanctuary for returning refugees.  A purpose built community for refugees, who, for one reason or another, could not return to their homes and villages.

As an example, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, people may be accused of witchcraft when they seem to have accrued wealth and status. People say they have used majini – bad spirits in Swahili – to attract success and affluence.  Fube has become a safe haven for those with concerns about their safety.

Great insights from Fube community members can be found in an article published by Robyn Leslie, who works as the regional advocacy and communications offers for the Jesuit Refugee Service, Southern Africa.  She shares stories from refugees in her compelling article “Refugees of Africa’s World War Still Fear Returning Home“.

One refugee, Kyomdwa Ntombo shares insight in the origins of the Fube name, “This is what the name ‘Fube’ means,” Kyomdwa Ntombo says. “It comes from an old French word that means ‘blurred’.

Fube posts kept anonymous to protect the innocent!

The term FUBES is the plural of fube. A FUBE is a replacement for a vacuum tube, using FET technology. If you plugged in a fube for a tube, the circuit might work better, but usually not. The fube was invented by engineers at National Semiconductor Corp in the 1960s, but never made any business or profit.

Note - if anyone out there can confirm or offer additional information on National Semiconductor and FUBES it woudl be greatly appreciated.

Just found a tweet that contained “fübe“, and was able to determine the language was Hungarian.   A quick trip to Google Translator indicated it means grass to our friends in Hungary.  Cool.

If anyone can help me out with more insights into the actual language usage it would greatly be appreciated.

Everything started here in Radom City (Poland) in 2000 on the trackside where i’ve met for the 1st time person who influenced me to record my first rap – Thortura. I’ve been listening to rap music since ‘Three is the magic number’ of De La Soul but i had never thought about creating it. At the begining we’ve been recordin by the name of Invisible Sense. Later .. years we recorded our 1st solo albums. Recording sessions have been done on simple music equipment what have changed while the time passed away. We’ve recorded 4 main projects (last one is Invisible Sense – Two Boroughs ’05). In 2006 i made my first solo album: Fube – White Chocolate and in 2007 this album was remixed by Radom’s beatmakerz such as – Wola, Tytuz, AlFath, Pila, Buba Bubsa, Kotzi, Thortura & Dj Slowo ( Fube – White Choclate Tha Remixes ’07 ). In 2007 we’ve made also Gs – La Cosa Nostra Mixtape which i recorded with my mates. I am also a music producer and graphic designer. At present i’m collecting pieces for my second album i’ll hopefully finish in 2009 (if i’ll finish it ).   .
